Degenerative joint disease, “DJD”, is basically wear and tear on the spinal bones and soft tissues, like the spinal disc. Degenerative joint disease can also be called osteoarthritis, or arthritis of the spine. Many people are not aware that they have degenerative joint disease of the spine as it can sit silently decaying the spine over many years.

While arthritis of the spine may not always produce pain, often patients will notice decreased mobility of the spine and “grating noises” in the spine called crepitus due to the changes in the spine as a result of osteoarthritis. Degenerative joint disease is not merely from the process of aging. Trauma and subluxation play keys roles in the formation of osteoarthritis.
